KIWASCO in partnership with Kisumu City Directorate of Public Health, Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Washington State University (WSU) and Sanivation have today, 15th June 2023 launched the GIS live data base for public sanitation facilities in the County of Kisumu. The event was held at Imperial Sarova Hotel and saw representatives from the County Government of Kisumu, KIWASCO, NGOs, actors in the sanitation sector and other Development partners attend.
A GIS mapping exercise of pay-to-use public toilets within Kisumu’s city boundary was conducted in March 2023, with the aim of developing a spatial and non-spatial database. During the exercise, 144 public toilets were mapped in Kisumu City and have been uploaded in the portal to determine the location of each. Findings of the report were presented during the event.
The launch event was presided over by the Ag. City Manager Mr. Abala Wanga accompanied by Managing Director KIWASCO, Mr. Thomas Odongo. Other attendees included Kisumu County Public Health Officer/ Head, Environment Health and Sanitation Division Mr. Jeremiah Ongwara, County WASH Coordinator Mr. Peter Sirima, City Public Health Director Mr. Joshua Adongo and County Sanitation Extender Ms. Gertrude Shisanya among others.
This is a great milestone towards providing sanitation interventions. This comes at a time when Kisumu City is rated the cleanest City in Kenya and number 6 in Africa.
