Partnership for improved water quality & aquatic environment

Yesterday, Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO) signed a Local partnership Agreement (LoA) with Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). The partnership aims at the enhancement of water quality and aquatic environment management in line with the two institutions’ mandate.

KIWASCO’s mandate is to supply reliable, accessible, quality water and sanitation for the residents of Kisumu city for improved livelihoods whereas KMFRI is mandated to undertake research in marine and freshwater fisheries, aquaculture, environmental and ecological studies, and marine research including chemical and physical oceanography.

Speaking during the signing ceremony held at KIWASCO headquarters, the Deputy Director, KMFRI Dr. Christopher Aura said, “Once this partnership grows strong enough and bears fruits, we will bring in institutions that are involved in environmental management and water resources to be able to witness the results achieved and use the data to inform guidelines and probably recommend to other related institutions for use.”

KIWASCO Managing Director, Thomas Odongo on the other hand expressed his confidence in the two institution’s ability to come up with decent solutions to challenges that face both of them and strengthen the quality of the aquatic environment.

The two parties are expected to put their machinery together to tackle today’s challenges in Lake and River water resources, and wastewater management to ultimately improve the livelihood of the Kisumu population and beyond.
